Aren’t Indians the most racist of people on this planet?

A Bollywood actress caught saying

so-and-so is amazing as a director. He can make even a black African look pretty”.

A Bollywood actor saying:

(I knew) it was time to leave Shanghai and Hong Kong after six weeks of stunt training and go home when his eyes started “turning into little slits like the Chinese”.

As the BBC critic of Indian origin remarks, these are not unsurprising remarks. As most Indians know, we make these remarks all the time and either don’t realize these are offensive, or just don’t care. Why, we have names for such obscenities. We call our north-eastern country-men(and women), or just any person with mongoloid features “chinky”. We call any white-skinned person “firangi”. Any person of African origin is still called a “negro”, decades after this term has been replaced by “africans” or “african americans” in politer societies.

The fact is that we Indians have more ways to divide and discriminate humans than any society in the world, but few Indians would admit to this. We discriminate by race, skin color, caste, religion, regionality(“madrasis”) … if there are any other ways to divide people that I can’t remember now, we probably do that too.

However, nobody in India has the guts to address this problem. We let people openly advertise for “fair”, “brahmin” etc. brides and grooms in matrimonial listings in newspapers and online sites. There is still no government push for banning all temples from restricting who can enter by caste. There is no push to accommodate our north-eastern brothers and sisters into mainstream society. In fact, most of India would rather revel in “Gandhigiri” but blissfully ignore that Iron Sharmila , who has redefined Gandhian methods of struggle, even exists.

Its a shame that we are a Racist country. The politicians who we call as our great leaders encouraged the caste system and reservations. We discriminate against dalits and the Congress party encourages it to get votes. Other dalit leaders also encourage it. We have learnt one bad skill which British used against us DIVIDE AND RULE. The Congress has taught us to master the skill and screw the system. We have to end the Caste based Racism. We have no right to call the Europeans and the British racist when we do it ourselves against our own people. Even till today we won`t like to eat food and drink water in a house of a Low caste Indian. We judge people by Money, Skin, Caste, Religion…etc. Why to blame others. In our National Airline low caste people work on lower jobs. U will never find a Air Hostess from a lower caste. On our Television channel the sexy looking Journalist is always fair probably a North Indian. Never a black looking Dalit will present news. If they do nobody will watch that News Channel. We only point to other people`s mistakes but we are dirty ourselves when doing this

From my experience with Indians, they are very racist.
I have an indian boyfriend, we have been dating for almost 2 years. While his sister is allowed to go out freely with her boyfriend (he is Indian also), my boyfriend is restricted to seeing me once or if we're lucky, twice a week. He has fought with his parents over this issue many times and it is because I am not Indian and I'm Muslim. I'm not particularly religious and I don't wear covered clothing. My hair is uncovered and my family is also quite liberal. Yet, they still have a problem with me.
I also learnt today that my boyfriend's parents have been sending him emails saying that if he marries me and we travel to India together, we will get attacked by fundamentalists who are unhappy with our marriage. They are trying to guilt him and scare him into breaking up with me!
My boyfriend and I get along so well and we truly love each other. Yet, we are being broken up. My boyfriend is always fighting with his parents and he is unhappy.
I'm sad and heartbroken that the most important person in my life is being taken away from me through no fault of my own.
My experience has led me to dislike Indians, even hate them…. and my boyfriend and all of my friends are Indian. So for me to dislike them is a big deal. I can see where all the hatred and racism against Indians comes from. I don't support it but I understand it. Indians have shown no love to me and I don't feel sorry for them when they scream Racism. They give racism out as good as they get. When Indians start taking a stand, I might change my mind…..

Coming from a muslim that’s a swell, was it not you people who caused 9/11. Bin Laden, is he an Indian hindu, oh sorry muslim. Somalia, Afgan, Iraq – again muslims.

      • Alexjones

Visit this website: http://www.infowars.com it shows how 9/11 was a red falg event to bring in the Illuminati’s New World Order.

    • Danar73

@NM, you muslims are no better, or less racist, than Indians. Your ‘faith’ has never faced the fact that it took part in the slave trade and is equally responsible for the damage caused to black people world wide.

You will all be brough to justice someday soon.

      • http://axetue.blogspot.com Sandeep Tripathy

Wow…..I seriously don’t know why the world is against the Muslims, only because they fight for themselves, Im not muslim(m atheist) but I dnt find anything wrong in Islam yet…

  • JasonKumar

Doesn't anyone think that it is a little wrong to say many Indians are racist? That is generalizing a billion people. And I know a lot of you will back your statement up by saying, “of course not of all them.. but many are..” Haha seriously? Many? That is such a pointless thing to say. Many must indicate that you have met a lot of them. And if there are a billion Indians, then the 10, 100, or even 10,000 Indians you have met just aren't a sufficient number for you to claim that “many” of them are racist.. Ill give you another example.
Although blacks account for only 12 percent of the U.S. population, 44 percent of all prisoners in the United States are black. Does that mean that almost half of all the black people you met are criminals? Of course not. It is prejudice to say that “most,” “many,” or “all” Indians are racist. That in itself is adding fuel to the flame that is discrimination in post 9/11 America, and frankly, we all should stop.

    • Danar73

No, we don’t think it’s wrong to generalise. Indians are vary cultural and racism (the caste system) is embedded deep withing your culture. Obviously there may be one or two indians who aren’t racist but the overwhelming majourity of you are. as racist as any clan member. You display racism against black so casually that one would think its genetic to your kind.
There is no point using your analogy of ‘black people and crime’ to try to prove your point because crime isn’t a part of black culture with, it is a social problem that affect the most disadvantaged in society. it just so happens that a large number of disadvantaged (in some countries) are poor and black.
Racism is interwoven in the Indian communty within your ‘caste system’- which you still follow. You guys are racist and you know it so give it a rest will you !

      • Anonymous

Don’t forget who implemented the caste system – white people

        We learn from our masters.

        • Danar

Yes, and you learned very well. But whites have dropped that caste system but you Indians still practise it and show no signs of abandoning it any time soon.

Bipasha, priyanka, sushmita, lara, kajol, rani, deepika, genelia, the b-grade actress list is much longer.these are all dark women.also is it possible for morons like you to understand that hindi is spoken & understood in northern india.Bollywood movies target audiences are people of northern indiian origins mainly. Not those from UP,Bihar,Kharkhand,Chattisgarh etc coz regional cinema has taken over there. But delhi, punjab, mumbai & essentially the multiplex audiences in big cities.Regional cinema's taken over the single-screen audience. So you have some, repeat some actors who're fair-skinned.But do you realise the biggest prejudice i bollywood us aginst outsiders.Ranbir, kareena,& pretty much every young star in the industry has family links. These youngsters can be fair, black, brown, yellow pink or any bloody colour and they'd still get a chance.bacchhan jr is dark. His wife is fair.they got married didn't they?NRI''s & PIO's have no real idea of india.PIO's shouldn't be calling themselves indian. You're either american or indian. Can't be both.

  • Lazlow

I would like to say one thing. Indians are racist as hell. Proof – Bollywood. Want more proof ? then travel to this country. You’ll see wtf I’m talking about.

  • http://zerocorpse.tumblr.com/ ZeroCorpse

I live in a community that has a lot of Indian immigrants. Many are very traditional, very clandestine, and very haughty and racist. They are “politely racist”, but they certainly do seem to judge other people based on social class, at the very least. It’s as if they’re still living under the caste system, and people in America who are of lower class are dirt to be scraped off their heels. I find this attitude is common among older Indian people. Younger people seem to be a lot less rude, and much more open about who they associate with. It’s hard to stop thinking a certain way when you’ve lived it your whole life, and it’s really no different than southern Americans who treat African Americans poorly, or people who grew up during World War II and see Asians– especially Japanese people– as “the enemy”. A long life of being surrounded by a specific culture can lead to difficult social situations when you’re exposed to more open minds. I have a suspicion that the Indians I encounter here who are almost always rude and seem somewhat bigoted, might be from wealthy families. It may be that wealth is more of a motivating factor in their treatment of “lesser people” than race or culture.Who’s to say? I just wish they’d be nice and mean it when I interact with them, instead of getting that condescending sneer on their face, as if my presence is somehow offensive to them. I want to say, “Yeah, you’re no sweet joy to hang around either, pal.”

  • idontcare

indian think they are so special like lets see your all racist what do you have to be proud of you country is so poor and you all cant even fit in it cus there are so many of you you hate every one elese but your selves please go to hell

A friend of mine (Kenyan/Asian) married a Polish woman a few years ago here in the UK.
    It didnt work out.
In the end she stopped visiting the family home as she never felt welcome there.
His parents started trying to get him to date Punjabi women almost immediately the divorce was through.

Sorry you guys have to face up to it. It may be worse in your parents generation but as a white Brit whose hung around with Indians quite a lot, I often hear throwaway comments that would be completley unacceptable in white society, usually aimed at Africans but ALSO at white Europeans as well, especially Poles and other Eastern Europeans. It strikes me that this is made worse by the fact that so many Indians have prospered in the UK and benefitted from accomodation being made towards them, which they are now unwilling to make to other incoming communities.

    Multi cultural means just that.

  • sad truth

Bollywood? In India parents discriminate against the darker child.

    • AussieDog1195!!

      good point there.

  • Rahul

It’s great to read this blog and comments and see a variety of opinions from such a diverse range of people.

Yes, it’s a big generalization to assume that all Indians are racists. No, I don’t think so.

But, when you look at the issue globally, things seem to be slightly worrying. Why are Indians picked on in Australia? Why are white women almost always portrayed as sl*ts in Bollywood movies? Why are there so many Indian “ghettos” in London? Why is there always an Indian Society at universities across the western world who will organize Diwali for everyone, yet, Indians will never attend events organzined by any other society?

    And so on …

The problem is that what Indians see as the norm for rules of engagement is perceived as racism in the west, and other parts of the world.

The problem is that most Indians fail to acknowledge this, and will violently defend this.

The problem is that in defending this ideology on another nations’ ground, they open themselves to racism, abuse, violence and discrimination.

I’ve got an Indian parent, although I’ve never grown up in India and respectfully don’t consider myself an Indian. I’ve faced a substantial amount of racism in my life, yet not so much as that I’ve experienced in India.

    • Buck_987

I like your calm answer. I can only comment as to alleged negative treatment of Indians in Australia (where I live). To be honest I think its just a bit of media hype in India because statistically the attacks have been pretty few, and there’s never been any convincing evidence to show they were race based opposed to general violence (in one high profile case it turned out the basher was actually Indian himself).

I’m not saying there’s not a problem, but I can assure you its a minority and my friend Abhinay has said he’s never felt fear of being bashed for his race (though he has of course heard the occasional racist remark).

It’s a lot like the perceived problem in Australia of Middle Eastern rapists. I’m studying law at UNSW and the statistics show these are a very low minority of cases, but they attract so much attention because of that race and fear division. The media in both India and Australia should take be ashamed for hyping race violence to score ratings points

  • Frankigh

Indians are bunch of smelling and dirty racist, I dont know why they fancy themselves so much, they are very poor and classless, they are dirtier than any other race and yet they still claim to be superior, I would kill any Indian i set my eyes on if I have the opportunity.

    • SBM

hey frankie, nice funny comment you’ve got… what language man! feels awesome to realize we indians can piss people of this bad. tell you not many can do that!!!
so wish u luck in continuing being a loser ;)

    • http://axetue.blogspot.com Sandeep Tripathy

Listen Buddy,we are not dirty people but ya there are people who due to poverty lack the basic hygene in some cases but as far as we think there is no racism at least not for the foreigners and I have plenty of friends from diff countries and feels great to be with them. What ever you think may be because of some bad experience or kinda thing which you may have heard and not experienced.

    • Baby Jesus Al Judea

Mate theres nearly 2 billion round the world! i guess your just blowing smoke up everyones butt! And indians gave the world soap and showed the wolrd how to wash including the europeans! Indians are not racist they have a tendency to be rude not to other races as much as they are to each other! White people in India are treated royally, other indians are treated like feaces by indians! but the point of all this is that calling an indian names means nothing to them they have thick skin and can take what you throw! just ask the british! Indians are so resilient its admireable!

    • AussieDog1195!!

Wow! you’ve got some serious problems dude! calm down!…….. and what are you french? …English?…American? or just another pakistani pretending to be someone from any of those countries.

just even try to touch one indian in front of me.

  • Josh Ambani

    @Frankigh
I live in Israel with my Jewish mother and Hindu father, and how dare you say that Indian’s are smelly, dirty, poor and classless! You deserve to rot in Hell for that! If anything, you ignorant British, American and Christian&Catholic people are the racist people especially you scum.
How can you make such a bold statement, about such a big race? I know a lot of Indian people who are nothing like this. Some of the richest people in the world are Indian. The whole white community is racist, against Blacks, Asians and South Asians, and Hispanics.

    • Danar

@Josh Ambani, Indians are a bunch of racist, colour obsessed europe-worshipping, self hating shit carriers. Trying to ‘rally’ all races against whites won’t work because the racism displayed by Indian is evident to anyone who live along side them. Even those born and raised in the west are as racist as their parents and grand parents

      • http://axetue.blogspot.com Sandeep Tripathy

We are not against the whites or Europeans. We have never indulged in a war and are currently trying our best to renew aur relationship with Pakistan as well.So please let go this misunderstanding now…

    • Buck_987

I’m a white male from Australia. My best friend’s names are Virosh and Abhinay. I understand its easy to get defensive about issues of race, but it doesn’t make sense to make the criticism that the “whole white community is racist” and yet make similarly racist remarks by calling white people “ignorant” and “scum”. Unfortunately, all nations have racists but its not fair to form your view of that race based on these people.

It’s like Martin Luther said: ‘Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that”

      • Andrew

btw I don’t mean to single you out. The comments by a number of other contributors on both sides have been disgusting

      • Ausdez

Your correct, why does he think this way, but suicide is not a crime, depending on your country

I agree! thats what I point out (along with some of the possible reasons as to what lead to this) in my blog post http://www.nitinalabur.com/2007/06/racist-indians.html

  • ammel

I searched ‘racist Indians’ on google and came to this. This Indian lady just verbally attacked me on the bus for ‘going in front of her’, she then started murmuring in her language and called me a skunk! lol. I went to the back of the bus, with her still shouting the odds.. I mean, really? She was older than my mum…anyhow, this white man turned around and told her to stop being racist and that she can go back to her country too if she’s going to say that. I couldnt hear what she was saying at this point, from the back of the bus, but I could sure as hell guess. She was absolutely vile in the way she lashed out on me!! This was Southall, and the bus was full of Asians so she was completely in her comfort zone… what a world eh.

  • kaushik

The last para is very relevant in the context of contemporary Indian society.

But I cant agree with the overall thesis of the commentary. It is certainly true that often we address people (or a group of people) based on their racial identities – but not all the time with the express intent of demeaning them. Often it is used because it is convenient. Moreover replacing a word like ‘negro’ with ‘african’ or ‘african american’ does not have very much significance in Indian context since we did not use he word ‘negro’ for insulting someone – we learnt it only as a convenient racial identifier (but without any negative implication). So ‘negro’ or ‘african american’ does not make much difference for an average Indian.

When my grandma asks me about my ‘madrasi’ colleague – she does not want to insult him (she rather likes him and only worried about his well being), but we in India having so many different languages and so many drastically different tonal qualities in the languages – it becomes very difficult for her for her old age (and upbringing) to remember or pronounce my tamil speaking friend’s name correctly. I have never seen any person of my age group address someone as ‘madrasi’. ‘Chinky’ is definitly an exception and I still do not understand the reason. May be they are physically very different from rest of us, but so are tamils from a punjabi. But almost universally they are called as ‘chinkies’ by almost every other contemporary Indian social groups. One reason may be that they stay a little bit aloof from others and like mixing with their own people. But I cant say for sure whthere that is the ’cause’ or the ‘effect’ of the social phenomena.

  • 4enanc

Yes, they are very racist. I came up with this answer after working at 2 jobs where I had Indian bosses women. They are extremily racist, they have support of all Indian employees and stay and keep it together and cover up each other and lie – does not matter on your job performance. They push you out of work, and when you leave – they tell you – you were actually very smart and great, and I will always give you a great recommendation – but we do not need you, a white woman, at US company, a US company is the place where only Indian people should work.

  • Saravan_86

wtf you talking bout man you think we, are racist, go look in the fucking mirror, all you gotta do is take off your fucking kippa, or robe, and the world will open up to you like you just fell from the sky, you really think we the racist ones, when you guys outplayed on everything, hollywood, the media, ads, posters, etc, you fucking name it. It so happens everytime i do one little thing like j-walk, one of your dirthy kind sticks their head out the window and call me pakki or nigger

Try to find an Indian owned Subway, Quiznos, Dunkin Donuts, Baskin Robbins, or any other franchise they own, hiring non Indians. When you walk in, it will be all Indian all the time. I don’t understand why these companies condone these racist hiring practices. And where is the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

    • Goodnice12

its because they hire illegally and cheap labors so that they can make heaps and heaps of money. Even students who come here on F1 visa work illegally outside and the indian owner of Subway, …… hire them for CASH PAYMENT not cheque payment. We should ruin these businesses by checking their tax returns. We should tell it to Obama and these owners dont even share their money with others. I mean not even a cup of water to a poor man. We should hack them and take their wealth.

  • 4enanc

2 Indian bosses – male and female, at a high position in government stole 6 million dollars from Red Cross. After they were caught and placed in jail (and only part of money recovered from India where they sent it), another 2 Indian bosses – male and female were hired by the same government unit…
Another job example – Indian boss female with her all Indian team screws things up in IT on a constant basis and teaches over email on how to lie and cover it up nonstop – teaches her team to hide and lie. She emails to her Indian guys saying please try to not bill too much overtime when she tells me (a white person) – you cannot bill full time as company does not have much money, and she takes away my projects and gives them to her Indian boys. And this is done against the will of all customers and managers I was working for, who were bragging her to keep me as I did great job! They were literally asking her right in front of the development teams orally and by email to keep me – to no avail. She took away my job and gave it to a person who already screwed up many things in production and did not even know my job well and could not even speak English well – but he was Indian, and that was the only thing she cared about.

  • Begbie

You Indians are you own worst enemy, bickering amongst themsleves and persisting with your caste system. Treating your own like animals. Because of this, you will always be shackled to poverty (with a small minority getting richer). I was over in Basgalore last June and I may as well have been on the planet Mars.

I hate indians. They are the most shallow, self absorbed of people. Who the hell are they to be racist to anyone? They opporate a caste system that is based on skin shade. They worship at the feet of whites, even after whites treated them like crap. This is true slave mentality. The idiot beloow, ‘Baby Jesus Al Judea ‘ proved this in ‘its’ comment reguarding how well whites are treated. The only thing that matters to Indian is light skin, to the point that a dark skined Indian is considred a light skined foriegner. How messed up is that? The fact that they are the most populous race makes my blood boil. There is nothing of value in these worthless, low life cretins.

I agree that we, Indians use words like chinka, bihari or sardar… But it’s in good faith and the ones it is used against don’t consider it offensive either. I am a baniya and people do call me so. If someone is offended by the use of such a the word, it will be only because he/she is no proud of his/her community. Ain’t it similar to being called an Indian or an American? After all, that too is regionalism. Racism and regionalism etc. is if we discriminate someone on the basis of his race or region. Calling him a name is not discrimination. We are not denying him any right or favouring someone else over him… We are not even saying that he is inferior to someone. It is just like a nickname.
As for your opening statement by the bollywood actor, the one against chinese, what’s offensive about that? The chinese have narrow eyes and it’s a fact. It’s a simple statement to be taken with humour. It is not like categorising blondes to be dumb. Is it wrong to say that Africans have black skin or Europeans have white skin? There’s no sense of superiority or inferiority here.
